A couple of weeks ago Apple announced a $6 million program to recycle old iPhones and iPads.
The program, which began last summer, lets people who have lost their device get a replacement.
The goal of the program is to reduce the number of people who can’t return to their old iPhones, as well as to recycle them, in an effort to reduce energy use, reduce landfill, and improve environmental quality.
The company has been offering the program since October, and now that it’s over, you can go to apple.com/recycle to register your device and receive a replacement in the mail.

You’ll need an Apple ID and password.
You can only register once, so make sure you don’t have a bunch of old iPhones or iPads around that you’re not using.
The app will then send a reminder to you once the new device is in the recycling bin.
You may not use your device for more than two weeks.
Once your device is sent, you’ll have 24 hours to get it back.
Once you return it, you have three days to send it back in the same condition.
If you’re unable to return the device, the company will replace it for you.
The process may take up to 10 business days.
Apple says it will send the replacement back to you in one of these three ways: in the morning, after Apple’s normal office hours; within two weeks after your device has been returned; or within six weeks after you receive it from Apple.
The two-week waiting period is important.
If the device is returned in a damaged condition, Apple won’t replace it.
You should check your address and phone number to make sure your device hasn’t been used and that you can contact Apple Support.
You also have a couple of options for how you can recycle your device: you can send it to a third-party recycling company, such as Walmart, Target, or Costco; you can bring it to Apple and the company may replace it with one of its own refurbished devices; or you can just keep it in the bin, which is the most efficient way to dispose of old devices.
What happens if I don’t get my new device in time?
You may have to pay a $50 fee.
If Apple says your device won’t be delivered to you, Apple will send you a new one, or you may be able to request a new device by contacting Apple’s support.
What if I lose my old device?
If you can’t find it, Apple’s program does not apply to lost or stolen devices.
If your old device is stolen or lost, the process may be different.
If there’s a dispute, Apple is willing to help you, but you can call the company at 1-800-832-3300 or 1-866-735-2700.
The only way to get the replacement is to send a new phone, tablet, or other item in the recycle bin.
Apple has not yet said when the program will end.
