5.8 million Irish citizens are participating in the Civilian Marking Program, which was launched in 2012.
The program is being supported by the Government’s new Criminal Justice Strategy.
In a statement, Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald said the program is a vital tool to reduce crime and ensure people are aware of their rights.
“This initiative has been the result of a collaboration between the Government and Civilian marking teams from the police, health service and voluntary organisations, and is a great example of how we can work together to support the community to protect themselves and their property,” she said.
“In the past year, this initiative has helped to reduce over 600 criminal offences.”
The results of the program have been very encouraging, and are a strong testament to the fact that this work is not only supported by our local communities but also is part of a Government commitment to a safe and sustainable Ireland.”RTE’s Marking Campaign has received £50 million of the Government money and is supported by private sector organisations.
The CivilianMarking Program will continue to operate until 2020.
